FSF-U integrates both formal and informal education in all its programs to support people living with people living with sickle cell disease. The organization seeks innovative and culturally relevant ways to educate and raise awareness. Recognizing that individuals with sickle cell disease often require costly care, which burdens families, FSF-U steps in to offer support. We provide educational assistance such as school supplies, tuition, and guidance to help people with sickle disease and other vulnerable individuals to achieve sustainable development.

Friends Sickle cell Foundation Uganda (FSFU) conducts community outreaches, including counselling and genotype screening, to raise awareness and reduce the inheritance of sickle cell disease. Through medical camps, in partnership with Bint Medical Centre and other facilities, FSF-U provides free medical support, and small health insurance to those who cannot afford treatment.

To address food insecurity among the beneficiaries and vulnerable individuals, FSFU promotes nutrition by distributing egg-laying chickens and encouraging the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, and root crops. They also train families in energy-saving cooking methods and animal husbandry to improve income and sustainability. These efforts aim to reduce poverty, improve health, and promote long-term community well-being.

Advocacy and awareness

Providing information on sickle cell disease, poverty and social stigma. People with sickle cell and the vulnerable experience hardships and these include; increased depression, anxiety, social withdraw, aggression, poor social relationship and poor school performance for those in school.

Through our counselors we give psychosocial support on mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs to these people and their families to build internal and external resources to cope with diversity. This promotes a sense of safety, calmness, self and community efficacy, social connectedness, inclusion and hope.

Economic Empowerment:

Under this we have the micro credit scheme, we believe in making the lives of families of people living with sickle cell disease and the vulnerable by participating in community driven initiatives through partnership based on mutual respect and trust. Encourage and promote commercial farming in communities by sensitizing them on modern farming.

We promote the spirit of saving by encouraging people with sickle cell and vulnerable people to form clubs, association and also support them financially. This has been possible through Friends of Sickle cell foundation Uganda saving and micro credit where members make monthly savings and have acquired small loans which have changed their economic status.

Research.:

We conduct research accordingly especially with reasons of delivering evidence based interventions to the community for instance ‘the caring for children with sickle cells disease’ 2024 which was intended to guide the organization in exploring and documenting the experiences of parents/caretakers of children with sickle cell disease in Wakiso District.
